1/12/2023 0 Comments Lost in the storm carol carrick![]() Young technophiles won't learn a thing about real dinos, software or outer space, but they will be entertained. Patrick's latest adventure is purely entertaining fare. Patrick romps among the herbivores before returning home. ![]() He introduces himself as Flato (""It rhymes with Play-Doh"") and whisks Patrick off to a planet with a welcoming committee of dinosaurs. ""I'll be there soon,"" he says and promptly arrives at the window in a spaceship. The roly-poly dino wears a pair of purple wraparound sunglasses. Suddenly, ""the freckled face of a dinosaur"" appears on the screen. His brother, Hank, nods off to sleep, but Patrick is mesmerized by his starry screensaver. Patrick's musing at the close of What Happened to Patrick's Dinosaurs?-that the prehistoric animals ""built a big spaceship and left""-proves to be true, as he discovers during a chat with an extraterrestrial dinosaur via an Internet link. While those books featured realistic-looking dinosaurs in impossible settings, Milgrim (Dog Brain Cows Can't Fly) doodles these dinos-they are as whimsical as their surroundings. Recommended to anyone who read and enjoyed Sleep Out, as well as to those who enjoy vintage picture-books.Carrick created Patrick's Dinosaurs and its sequel with her late husband, illustrator Donald Carrick. I particularly liked the scene in which Christopher and Bodger met again, and the beach scenes were also well done. The artwork here had a somewhat dated feeling - the clothing, the furniture, and so on - but was still quite effective. Christopher's concern is evident throughout the latter half of the book, making the eventual happy reunion all the more satisfying. ![]() Like its predecessor, Lost in the Storm pairs an engaging story with appealing illustrations. Now living in the country, Christopher rides the ferry over to the island home of his new friend Gray, taking his dog, Bodger, with him. The boys play pirate on the shore, while Bodger wanders off. Christopher must wait out a long, fretful night before searching for his dog lost during an evening storm. Young Christopher, who first appeared in Carol and Donald Carrick's Sleep Out, returns in this second picture-book adventure. The illustrations are nice enough and in some places lovely, some good scenes from nature in some places they do look dated, very 70s looking and overly brown.Īn enjoyable read about a boy and his dog. I liked that aspect of the book and the simple storyline was enjoyable. This story is from an era when young children roamed about all day, got dirty and tired and encountered a bit of danger. This was a nice story and it was good to see some imaginative outdoor play. They are reunited the next morning and they both return home, tired out from their adventure. When a storm comes Christopher has to spend the night at his friends house but Bodger has disappeared. He takes his dog Bodger and the boys have a wonderful day playing on the beach, collecting washed up items and making up games. This story is from an era Christopher gets the ferry across to a nearby island to visit his friend. ![]() Christopher gets the ferry across to a nearby island to visit his friend.
